Hypnobirthing teaches women and their birth partners, the skills to use self-hypnosis to face their birth calmly and in control. It will assist them to achieve a deep state of relaxation that will optimise their natural hormones and allow their body to do the work of birth while their mind remains calm and focussed. A calm, positive birth experience with a supportive and involved partner is the goal of hypnobirthing. Hypnosis has been shown to be an effective method for pain relief, allowing the mind to manage the physical pain their body is experiencing. The techniques used in hypnobirthing can reduce the need for analgesia in labour and lead to fewer augmentations of labour (where clinicians use synthetic hormones to assist labour which often slows in response to pain relief). We understand that you may want pain relief as part of your birth plan and that is ok, you can still use the skills you will learn to facilitate labour alongside your chosen analgesia. Hypnobirthing will give you the skills and understanding of labour so that you can be the master of your birth.
